Resume red flag
Lauren Gardner, Microsoft Recruiter
The average employer spends 6 seconds looking at a resume. One way to grab attention is to demonstrate your willingness to learn and take professional risks. “We’re looking for folks that are motivated to constantly learn and grow,” she says. “We’re not looking for know-it-alls, we’re looking for learn-it-alls”. Even if you’ve had the same job title for awhile, you should volunteer for different projects or work in different teams. It can also be helpful to use keywords like “growth” or “learning” to describe work experiences.
Some recruiters look for what you’re like outside of your professional persona. They may look for a hobbies or interests section. “This can include a short sentence about your values, a bulleted list of hobbies or five words that describe yourself, to name a few examples”.
“We are hiring the whole person, so we are truly looking for people who have interests outside of their immediate role as a student or an employee,” she says. “That’s really important to us – at Microsoft, we’re looking for people who not only bring a set of skills and experiences, but show us what they bring to the table as human beings … people who tell us how they can make a positive impact here and add to our culture.”
chmod: change mode
chmod is the Unix command for changing access permissions for files and
directories. There are several different ways to express permissions, but I’m
focusing on the two most popular ones I’ve encountered.
There are three classes of people who can access the file system: user, group,
other. For each class, you can set read (r), write (w), or execute (x)
permissions. Here’s an example: rwxr-x---. This gives read, write, and
execute permissions to user, read and execute permissions to group, and no
permissions to other.
Permissions can also be set using a four digit number. The leftmost digit is a
special mode bit, where $ \{ sticky, setuid, setgid \} = \{ 1, 2, 4 \}$.
Each class has a number from 0 to 7 that enumerates all the combinations of
rwx, where each permission has these values: $\{ r, w, x \} = \{ 4, 2, 1
\}$. For example, the default for a new file is $0664$. This translates to no
special mode; sets read, write permissions for user and group; but only
gives read permission to the other class.
