Real Productivity: How to build habits that last

SkillShare class by Thomas Frank

Perfect is the enemy of good

Work at your own pace. Many people will try to do too much all at once or try to compare their progress to others. Don’t do that. The key is consistency. Do a little bit today; do a little bit tomorrow.

Make things that are good enough. Bias towards action. Set a deadline and publish, even it is not perfect to you. By doing this, you will learn more from producing five good enough projects than from one perfect project (that you may or may not finish).

Determining my goals

  • The impossible list
    • Why does the goal matter to me?
    • Will they continue to motivate me in the future?
    • commit to only 3 to 4 goals
  • Warren Buffett list strategy
    • List 25 goals
    • Pick the top 5 goals
    • Discard the other 20 goals
      • These are a distraction to you
  • The Dip
    • the point in your progression where you lose motivation
  • Types of progress
    • gear acquisition
    • learning
    • deliberate practice, or actual work
  • What if I don’t have enough time for all my goals?
    • Accept that you have a finite amount of time
    • Accept that you won’t be able to accomplish all your goals
    • You can still accomplish great things
  • What if I don’t have goals?
    • This is usually because you haven’t tried doing many things
    • Look at other people’s impossible or bucket lists
